Need some advice

I've now seen several of my co-workers breaking the law--speeding through the parking lot, failing to stop at stop signs, not using turn signals, etc.

A great man once said "It is all about who you are when on one is looking." If we are to be examples in the company and in the community, shouldn't we be following the rules ALL the time--including not litering (cigarette butts ARE litter!).

I want to sit down with these individuals and share with them my concern. I'm not perfect, but I ALWAYS stop completely at stop signs, I rarely forget my turn signal, and I drive at a safe speed through parking lots. I mean, hell, one of them is the damn Safety Coordinator here. Of all people SHE should be demonstrating safe behavior at all times.

omg - you're probably the first person other than myself to talk about how cigarette butts are litter! *kowtow*kowtow*

i'll see someone at a light throw out their butt and i'll have to fight back the urge to say, 'excuse me, you dropped something.'

I think of cigarette butt littering as "paper rabies." Bede says it's like walking into someone's house with muddy shoes on, or picking your nose and wiping it on the wall. Maybe he didn't say the 2nd one, but that's what I think of it as being akin to. It's a free country, you get to smoke if you want to, but I shouldn't have to smell the smoke, and I certainly shouldn't have to pick cigarette butts off my lawn.

I think we need to people's senses of pride. Any other ideas? I want something that actually works, not something that just appeals to my short-term sense of vengeance. Hah!@

Man, you guys really have it in for us smokers eh. I can honostly say I don't throw my butts out my car window, which is why the ashtray in my car is overflowing. Just because bodies are biodegradable doesn't mean your not littering J.

True, Nonny. But I don't throw my bodies out the window.

More important to me is the dirivng issue. We are supposed to be model citizens in the community...that's what it says on the board in the hallway. Rolling through stop signs, cutting people off in traffic, stuff like that is agains the law and just plain stupid.

I want to sit down with these folks and just say something, but I don't know how to do it and still maintain professionalism and respect.

How about sending out an anonymous email, company-wide, regarding all the dangers that are being witnessed in the parking lot? Maybe remind people that some folks may have their children with them in emergency situations, meaning there may be kids in the parking lot who may get hit. I don't know how to say that clearly. My head is crooked today. Just some thoughts, though.

I've thought about a company-wide e-mail encouraging people to be Model Citizens and all that.

Not sure that's the route I want to take...as it is not my job to tell people that kind of stuff. I'm not a manager, hell, I don't even have an intern reporting to me. I'm a nobody.

Nonny,

It's not that I have it in for cigarette smokers. A bunch of them are my friends. Most of the people on my husband's side of the family smoke like chimneys. Two have already died of it and the others are slowly on their way. The thing is, they're so staunch about some things that they believe are absolutely positively right, no arguments brooked, but can rationalize anything that they actually like. I know that's human nature, and I am one of them, too (unlike Brad, who gets to smoke with impunity all he wants!), but it frustrates me to be so helpless. When the cigarette butts then get thrown on the grass, it's insult to injury. I don't know-- perhaps I shouldn't even post this. I just hope you know that just because I don't like cigarettes doesn't mean I don't like you!:)

And the way you treat those who can do nothing for you.
