Thank you Jackie Robinson
Many of my Blogger buddies have posted on diversity and/or racism. I've made my fair share of comments. I will be brief.
I was browsing Yahoo! Sports today grieving over my Yankees and looking for news on how we'll win next year and found this article.
My comment on it is: So what? So what if through the normal process of developing, scouting, hiring, and firing talent, fewer and fewer blacks or African Americans are involved in one particular sport. So long as there is no one intentionally keeping any one race, creed, or sexual preference out of the sport, then what does it matter? Selig made the comment that we need to do more to promote the sport? Why spend the money? You've already got baseball plastered all over TV (ask Nonny) not to mention magazines, little league, Babe Ruth and other summer children's leagues. If the draw for young black American boys is Basketball and Football, then so be it. Should we be encouraging young white boys to pick fights in the playground so there will be more white boxers? Why not go out and promote the NHL in Japan, Cuba and the Dominican?
Joe Morgan is a great guy and I love listening to his commentary. This post is NOT to discredit him or his beliefs. As an African-American (former) ballplayer, he should be encouraging people to take up the sport. Just like I encourage the youth of today to consider the lucrative career of "waste management."
Baseball may be corrupt with steroids and stupid people and all that crap, but racist and non-diverse it is not. Quick props to Jackie Robinson for breaking down the barrier!
On a side-bar (just a ploy to try to get more comments), Selig should not be allowed to tout his power as he has. I'll cut him some slack when he allowed the All-Star game to end in a tie a few years back, but forcing the Astros to play with the roof open was a blatant show of power that should be seriously re-considered by MLB. That's a bunch of bull-loney. It is no excuse for their poor performance last night. What's the point of building a gazilion-dollar park with a retractable roof if you can't close the damn thing when it gets cold!? The poor fans thought they could watch the game in comfort, and ended up having to boo through chattering teeth!

I'm gonna add to this controversey: have you noticed that there has been a HUGE cry on racism for the last few months? Katrina might not have started it, but she definately got it voiced more openly. Ironically, you know who I see screaming about it the most? White folks.
I'd say, if the African American population would like to complain about a couple of baseball teams who don't employ a black player, they should. But, if it's a non-issue in the black community, leave it be all you "I'm not a racist, I'm pro-whatever!" whites. I have to wonder if the black community ever ponders why there aren't more young white men in the NBA. Could it be that each sport has its own drawing?
Well, Amy, Joe Morgan was the one who started this discussion. He IS black.
To add to it, now there is this Fisher DeBerry thing. The guy gave a back-handed compliment and is now having to appologise? He said that Air Force Academy should recruit more blacks because statistically blacks run faster and the team needs more speed (football).
Remember when folks got upset over "Redskins" and "Indians" and the Native American people came forth and said it was an honor to their tribe?
